Nglycoside

Nglycoside refers to a glycoside where the sugar moiety is attached to a nitrogen atom of the aglycone. Glycosides are compounds formed from a sugar molecule and another functional group, which is known as the aglycone. In the case of N-glycosides, the aglycone contains a nitrogen atom that forms the glycosidic bond with the sugar. This type of bond is also referred to as an N-glycosidic bond.

N-glycosides are a significant class of biomolecules, particularly important in biological systems. The most well-known examples are found in nucleic acids. In DNA and RNA, the nucleobases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, and uracil) are attached to the ribose or deoxyribose sugar molecules via N-glycosidic bonds. This linkage is crucial for the structure and function of genetic material.

Beyond nucleic acids, N-glycosides are also found in various other natural products and play roles in metabolic pathways. The stability and formation of N-glycosidic bonds can differ from O-glycosidic bonds (where the sugar is attached to an oxygen atom) or C-glycosidic bonds (where the sugar is attached to a carbon atom).
