Nevikijoki

Nevikijoki is a river located in what is now the country of Lithuania, although its historical length extended further into what is now Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. The river runs approximately 139 kilometers from its source to its mouth, emptying into the Curonian Lagoon near the city of Palanga.

The Nevikijoki river is a significant geographical feature in western Lithuania, passing through several municipalities and villages along its course. The river's name is derived from the Livonian words "nevi Marino" meaning "miracle water". Early inhabitants of the area were likely drawn to the river's resources and location, making it a key area for settlement.

Throughout history, the river has played an important role in the region's economic development. Its waters have been used for fishing, and the river's course was also a significant trade route, especially during the Hanseatic League period in the 15th-16th centuries. The city of Memel (now known as Klaipėda) was an important medieval trade center situated near the lower reaches of the river.

Despite some riverbank regulation and changes due to latter-day environmental concerns, the Nevikijoki remains an essentially natural watercourse.
