Neutrofilihapot

Neutrofilihapot refers to the acidic environment found within neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. Neutrophils play a crucial role in the innate immune system, primarily by engulfing and destroying pathogens through a process called phagocytosis. Within the neutrophil, a specialized organelle known as the phagosome fuses with lysosomes, forming a phagolysosome. This phagolysosome is where the breakdown and degradation of engulfed material occurs.

The interior of the phagolysosome is maintained at an acidic pH, typically between 4.5 and 5.5. This low pH is essential for several reasons. It optimizes the activity of various hydrolytic enzymes, such as proteases and nucleases, that are present in the phagolysosome and are responsible for breaking down cellular components and microbial DNA and proteins. Furthermore, the acidic environment can directly inhibit the growth and replication of certain bacteria and fungi.

The acidification of the phagolysosome is an active process, primarily driven by a proton pump (vacuolar-type ATPase) located in the phagolysosomal membrane. This pump actively transports protons from the cytoplasm into the phagolysosome, thereby lowering its internal pH. Dysregulation of phagolysosomal acidity has been linked to impaired neutrophil function and increased susceptibility to infections.
