Neuromag

Neuromag is a brand of magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems manufactured by Elekta. MEG is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique used to measure magnetic fields produced by electrical activity in the brain. These magnetic fields are extremely faint and require highly sensitive sensors to detect. Neuromag systems employ SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) sensors, which are cooled to very low temperatures to achieve the necessary sensitivity.

The primary application of Neuromag systems is in neuroscience research and clinical diagnostics. Researchers use MEG to study brain function, such as cognitive processes, sensory perception, and motor control. In clinical settings, Neuromag can assist in the diagnosis and localization of neurological conditions, including epilepsy, by identifying the origins of abnormal brain activity. The technology provides excellent temporal resolution, meaning it can track rapid changes in brain activity with millisecond precision, complementing other imaging techniques like fMRI which offer better spatial resolution but poorer temporal resolution. Neuromag systems are typically large, shielded rooms designed to minimize external magnetic interference, allowing for clear measurement of the brain's magnetic signals.
