Neulanvaihtoa

Neulanvaihtoa, also known as "needle exchange" or "syringe exchange," is a harm reduction strategy used to prevent the spread of bloodborne diseases, particularly HIV and hepatitis C, among people who inject drugs. The program involves the distribution of sterile syringes and needles to individuals who inject drugs, along with education and counseling on safe injection practices. The goal is to reduce the risk of infection by ensuring that used needles are properly discarded and new, sterile needles are used for each injection.

The concept of neulanvaihtoa was first introduced in the 1980s in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Since then, it has been implemented in various forms around the world, including in Finland, where it is known as "neulanvaihtoa." The program is typically overseen by public health authorities and is funded through a combination of government and non-governmental sources.

Critics of neulanvaihtoa argue that it may encourage drug use and contribute to the normalization of drug injection. However, proponents of the program maintain that the benefits of reducing the spread of infectious diseases outweigh these concerns.
