Netzabhängigkeit, also known as internet addiction or problematic internet use, refers to a compulsive and excessive use of the internet that interferes with a person's daily life. This can encompass a wide range of online activities, including social media, online gaming, pornography, and online shopping. It is characterized by a loss of control over internet usage, often leading to significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or academic functioning.

Individuals experiencing netzabhängigkeit may spend an excessive amount of time online, neglecting other responsibilities such as work, school, family, and personal hygiene. They might experience withdrawal symptoms like irritability, anxiety, or depression when unable to access the internet. The preoccupation with online activities can lead to social isolation in the real world, as individuals may substitute online interactions for face-to-face relationships.

The internet's immediate rewards, anonymity, and constant availability can be particularly appealing to individuals seeking escape or validation. While not yet officially recognized as a distinct diagnosis in major psychiatric manuals, netzabhängigkeit is a growing concern for mental health professionals and researchers. Treatment often involves cognitive-behavioral therapy, group support, and addressing any co-occurring mental health conditions.
