Nestetasapainohäiriöitä, or fluid and electrolyte imbalances, refer to conditions where the body's normal balance of water and essential minerals is disrupted. These imbalances can affect various bodily functions, including nerve and muscle activity, hydration levels, and blood pH.

The body maintains a delicate balance of water and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. This balance is regulated by hormones, the kidneys, and fluid intake. When this equilibrium is disturbed, it can lead to a range of symptoms.

Causes of fluid and electrolyte imbalances are diverse. They can stem from inadequate or excessive fluid intake, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, certain medical conditions like kidney disease or diabetes, or the use of some medications, particularly diuretics.

Symptoms vary depending on the specific imbalance. For example, low sodium levels (hyponatremia) can cause confusion, nausea, and headaches, while high sodium levels (hypernatremia) might lead to thirst, fatigue, and muscle twitching. Potassium imbalances are particularly critical, as they can affect heart rhythm.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and blood and urine tests to measure electrolyte levels. Treatment focuses on correcting the underlying cause and restoring the normal balance of fluids and electrolytes. This may involve dietary changes, fluid replacement, or medications. Severe cases may require hospitalization and intravenous administration of fluids and electrolytes.
