Neofunctionalització

Neofunctionalització refers to the process by which existing genes or gene networks acquire new functions. This evolutionary mechanism plays a crucial role in the development of biological innovation and the diversification of species. It is distinct from the creation of entirely new genes, instead relying on the modification and repurposing of pre-existing genetic material.

One common pathway for neofunctionalització involves gene duplication.
