Nenänkanavien

Nenänkanavien, which translates to "nasolacrimal ducts" in English, are a pair of small tubes that connect the lacrimal sac to the nasal cavity. Their primary function is to drain the tears produced by the lacrimal glands away from the eyes. This drainage is crucial for maintaining clear vision and preventing the accumulation of excess fluid in the eye.

The lacrimal glands, located above each eyeball, constantly produce tears to lubricate and protect the ocular surface. When we blink, tears are spread across the eye. Excess tears then flow towards the inner corner of the eye, where they enter tiny openings called puncta. These puncta lead to the lacrimal canaliculi, which are the initial part of the nasolacrimal ducts. The canaliculi merge into the lacrimal sac, a small reservoir situated in a groove in the skull. From the lacrimal sac, the tears travel down through the nasolacrimal duct, a passage that descends through the bone of the nose and empties into the nasal cavity.

This drainage system can sometimes become obstructed, leading to conditions like excessive tearing (epiphora) or dacryocystitis, an infection of the lacrimal sac. Obstructions can be caused by inflammation, infection, or congenital anomalies. Treatment for a blocked nasolacrimal duct often involves irrigation, probing, or in more severe cases, surgical intervention. The proper functioning of the nenänkanavien is essential for maintaining ocular health and comfort.
