Nemedian

Nemedian refers to a hypothetical ancient people or civilization associated with the mythical island of Nemed. This civilization is most famously described in Irish mythology, particularly in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of Invasions). According to these tales, the Nemedians were the third group of people to settle Ireland. They arrived after the Fir Bolg and before the Tuatha Dé Danann.

The Nemedians are said to have been a warlike people who established settlements and built fortifications across the island. Their reign was marked by periods of conflict, notably their struggles against the Fomorians, a race of monstrous sea-dwellers. Despite their initial successes, the Nemedians eventually suffered greatly under the oppression of their enemies, leading to a decline in their population and a scattering of their people.

The mythology states that after a period of severe subjugation and heavy tribute demanded by the Fomorians, the Nemedian people were driven out of Ireland or died in large numbers. Some fled to Britain, while others are said to have returned to their original homeland, the lands around the Black Sea. The Nemedian period in Irish myth is presented as a significant, albeit ultimately tragic, chapter in the early history of the island, paving the way for subsequent arrivals and the development of Irish culture. The name "Nemed" itself is believed to be derived from an Old Irish word meaning "sacred."
