Nationalregister

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of historic properties in the United States worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the Register is administered by the National Park Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Inclusion in the National Register signifies that a property is recognized as having significance in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture.

Properties listed on the National Register can include buildings, structures, districts, sites, and objects. Eligibility for listing is determined by demonstrating a property's association with significant events or people, its embodiment of distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or its potential to yield important archaeological or historical information. While listing in the National Register does not automatically protect a property from demolition or alteration, it does make owners eligible for certain tax credits and can influence decision-making processes for projects involving federal funding or permits. Nominations can be submitted by state historic preservation offices, tribal historic preservation offices, or directly by property owners.
