Naphtol

Naphtol refers to a group of organic compounds derived from naphthalene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Specifically, naphtols are hydroxylated naphthalenes, meaning they have one or more hydroxyl (-OH) groups attached to the naphthalene ring structure. The most common and significant naphtols are 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, which differ in the position of the hydroxyl group.

1-Naphthol, also known as alpha-naphthol, has the hydroxyl group attached to the first carbon atom of the naphthalene molecule. It is a white or slightly colored crystalline solid. 2-Naphthol, or beta-naphthol, has the hydroxyl group at the second carbon atom. It is also a crystalline solid, typically appearing as white or slightly yellowish flakes.

These compounds are important intermediates in the synthesis of various dyes, pigments, and pharmaceuticals. For example, they are used in the production of azo dyes, which are widely employed in the textile and printing industries.
