Nagybecskerek

Nagybecskerek is the Hungarian name for the city now known as Zrenjanin. It is located in the Vojvodina region of Serbia, situated in the Banat area. The city lies on the Begej River, a tributary of the Tisa. Historically, Nagybecskerek was a significant administrative and economic center within the Kingdom of Hungary and later within the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary.

The settlement's origins can be traced back to the medieval period, with documented evidence of its existence in the 14th century. Its strategic location contributed to its growth as a market town and a center for trade. Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the city experienced further development. The construction of railways and industrial facilities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries boosted its economic importance.

After World War I and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary, Nagybecskerek became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later renamed Yugoslavia. During this period, it was known by its Serbian name, Petrovgrad, and then officially renamed Zrenjanin in 1946. Today, Zrenjanin is the administrative center of the Central Banat District of Serbia and remains an important industrial and agricultural hub. The city's architecture reflects its diverse history, with buildings from various eras.
