NaCl and its Compound Salen

NaCl, also known as sodium chloride, is a salt composed of sodium and chlorine atoms. When NaCl reacts with salicylaldehyde, or salen, it creates a compound of formula NaCl-salen. This compound is a variant of the known salen ligand, and its chemical properties are influenced by the introduction of the NaCl entity.

The concept of introducing a metal halide into a chiral salen complex has been explored in recent years as a method of altering the properties of salen-based catalysts. In this context, NaCl has been chosen for its relatively low reactivity and ionic nature.

Studies of NaCl-salen compounds have shown that this entity has a notable effect on the NMR properties of the complex. The addition of NaCl resulted in broadening of signals in the aluminum-bound carbonyl peaks and had a small effect on the carbonyl-protected phenolic OH peak.

NaCl-salen is formed through a complex process beginning with the abstraction of a terminal chloride from NaCl. This step is facilitated under ultrasonic activation, which accelerates this process by creating disrupting associations that contribute to this valorous extraction.
