The high temperatures cause nitrogen and oxygen from the air to react. A significant source of NOx emissions is the transportation sector, including cars, trucks, and airplanes. Industrial processes and electricity generation are also major contributors.

NOx emissions are a significant air pollutant with adverse environmental and health effects. They contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, a key component of smog, which can cause respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis. NOx also plays a role in acid rain, which can damage forests, lakes, and buildings. Furthermore, nitrogen oxides can contribute to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. Regulatory bodies worldwide have established limits on NOx emissions from various sources to mitigate these harmful impacts and improve air quality. Technologies such as catalytic converters in vehicles and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) in industrial settings are employed to reduce NOx emissions.
