NMPt

New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is a major port on India’s west coast, located at Panambur near Mangalore in the state of Karnataka. It is one of the country’s 12 major ports and is administered as a port trust under the Major Port Trusts Act. The port serves as a key maritime gateway for Karnataka’s coast and the region’s hinterland, handling a mix of bulk, break-bulk and containerized cargo.

NMPT was established by the Government of India to augment port capacity on the Arabian Sea and to relieve congestion at other ports. The port operates multiple berths and terminal facilities designed to accommodate bulk commodities, general cargo, and containers. It maintains dredged depths to enable navigational access for a wide range of vessels and provides associated facilities such as storage yards and cargo-handling equipment.

The port is connected to regional road and rail networks, enabling the transfer of goods to and from hinterland markets across Karnataka and neighboring states. It is administered by the New Mangalore Port Trust, a statutory body with a board and chairman appointed by the central government, operating under national port governance frameworks.

NMPT pursues ongoing modernization and expansion programs to increase cargo handling capacity, improve efficiency, and enhance environmental and safety standards in accordance with national regulations. It contributes to regional trade, employment, and industrial activity in coastal Karnataka.
