NIOSH classification refers to the system used by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to categorize respiratory protective devices based on their filtering capabilities and intended use. This classification framework helps ensure workers are equipped with appropriate respiratory protection against occupational hazards such as dust, fumes, vapors, and infectious agents.

The primary categories in NIOSH classification are particulate filters and gas/vapor filters. Particulate filters are designated with a "N," "R," or "P" prefix, followed by a number indicating their efficiency. N-series filters (e.g., N95) are not resistant to oil and are suitable for non-oil-based particles. R-series filters (e.g., R95) are somewhat resistant to oil but offer limited use duration, while P-series filters (e.g., P100) are oil-proof and provide high efficiency against oil-based and non-oil-based particles. The numerical component indicates filter efficiency—95%, 99%, or 100%, corresponding to the filter's ability to block particles of specific sizes.

For gas and vapor protection, NIOSH classifies cartridges and canisters with letters representing the type of hazard: "O" for oxygen deficiency, "AG" for ammonia and organic vapors, "CV" for chlorinated organic vapors, and "NIOSH" standards also specify maximum use life and concentration levels.

The classification system aids in ensuring proper fit, filter replacement, and safety compliance. It is critical for employers and workers to select respirators with classifications suited to their specific occupational exposures to provide effective protection.
