NH4SCN
Ammonium thiocyanate, with the chemical formula NH4SCN, is an inorganic salt. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and alcohols. The compound is formed from the reaction of ammonia (NH3) and thiocyanic acid (HSCN). Ammonium thiocyanate is a commercially produced chemical and finds various applications. It is used in the synthesis of other thiocyanate compounds, as a stabilizer in photographic emulsions, and in the textile industry as a dyeing auxiliary. Historically, it was also used in the production of herbicides and insecticides, though these applications may be less common now due to environmental regulations. When heated strongly, ammonium thiocyanate decomposes. It can also react with certain metal salts to form insoluble precipitates. The compound is not considered particularly hazardous under normal handling conditions, but like many chemicals, appropriate safety precautions should be taken.
