NDIRbased refers to technology or devices that utilize Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) sensing principles. NDIR is an optical method for detecting the presence and concentration of specific gases. It works by measuring the absorption of infrared light at a wavelength that is characteristic of the target gas. Different gases absorb infrared light at unique wavelengths, allowing NDIR sensors to selectively identify and quantify them.

The fundamental components of an NDIR system typically include an infrared light source, a sample chamber through which the gas flows, an optical filter that allows only the specific wavelength of interest to pass, and an infrared detector. When the target gas is present in the sample chamber, it absorbs a portion of the infrared light at its characteristic wavelength. The detector measures the amount of light that passes through, and the difference between the initial light intensity and the detected intensity is directly proportional to the concentration of the gas.

NDIR technology is widely employed in various applications due to its reliability, long lifespan, and relatively low cost. Common uses include carbon dioxide monitoring in indoor air quality systems, medical equipment such as anesthesia and respiratory monitors, automotive exhaust gas analysis, and industrial process control. Its non-dispersive nature means it does not use a grating or prism to separate wavelengths, contributing to its simplicity and robustness.
