NAT64 and DNS64 Dual-Stack Light translation mechanisms are used to enable IPv6 communication between IPv4 and IPv6 networks by allowing IPv6-only nodes to communicate with IPv4-only nodes. This translation mechanism is specific to dual-stacked networks, which have both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity.

NAT64, or Network Address Translation-64, translates IPv6 addresses to IPv4 addresses, enabling IPv6-only nodes to access IPv4 nodes. On the other hand, DNS64 adds AAAA records to DNS responses, which allows the NAT64 to translate the DNS response to an IPv4 address that the node behind the NAT can understand.

In a NAT64 and DNS64 dual-stack setup, the DNS64 server performs DNS64 translation by inserting AAAA records for the requested domain. This allows the node to resolve the IPv6 address of server and connect to it through IPv4. However, there are challenges in implementing DNS64, and clients need to send queries over IPv6 when asking for IPv4 addresses, while the solution requires a heavy DNS infrastructure which can rely heavily on quick AAAA resource records.

A specific scenario when you would use NAT64 and DNS64 setups would be in countries where IPv6 is still in infancy, and IPv4 networks are the de facto standard.

Differences exist between NAT64 implementations in software level which affect heavily customer support.
