Næringsstofcyklusser, also known as biogeochemical cycles, describe the pathways by which essential chemical elements or compounds move through the Earth's biotic and abiotic components. These cycles are fundamental to life, as they ensure the continuous availability of nutrients necessary for biological processes. Key elements involved in these cycles include carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and water.

The carbon cycle involves the exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. Photosynthesis by plants removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, while respiration and combustion release it back. The nitrogen cycle is crucial for plant growth and involves the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms by microorganisms, a process known as nitrogen fixation. This nitrogen then moves through the food web and is eventually returned to the atmosphere through denitrification.

The phosphorus cycle differs from others as it lacks a significant atmospheric component. Phosphorus is primarily found in rocks and soil, and its release into ecosystems is mainly driven by weathering. Its movement is generally slower, and phosphorus can sometimes be a limiting nutrient in aquatic environments. The water cycle, or hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth, involving evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff.

Disruptions to these nutrient cycles, often caused by human activities such as pollution, deforestation, and the use of fertilizers, can have significant ecological consequences, leading to phenomena like eutrophication and climate change. Understanding these cycles is vital for sustainable resource management and maintaining ecosystem health.
