Näytönsuhteet, often translated as aspect ratio, refers to the proportional relationship between the width of a display screen and its height. It is typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9 or 4:3. The first number represents the width and the second represents the height. For example, a 16:9 aspect ratio means that for every 16 units of width, there are 9 units of height.

Historically, the 4:3 aspect ratio was common for television and computer monitors, reflecting the dimensions of traditional film. However, with the advent of widescreen televisions and modern computer displays, the 16:9 aspect ratio has become the dominant standard. This change was largely driven by the film industry's preference for wider cinematic formats and the desire for a more immersive viewing experience. Other aspect ratios exist, such as 21:9 for ultrawide monitors and cinematic films, and various older or specialized formats.

The chosen aspect ratio affects how images and video are displayed. If content does not match the display's aspect ratio, black bars may appear on the sides (letterboxing) or top and bottom (pillarboxing) of the screen to preserve the original proportions. Alternatively, the image can be stretched or cropped to fill the screen, which can distort the image or cut off parts of the content. Understanding aspect ratios is important for both content creators and consumers to ensure optimal viewing quality.
