MüllwärmeRecycling, also known as waste-to-energy or refuse-derived fuel, is a process that converts waste materials into heat and/or electricity. This method aims to reduce the volume of waste that would otherwise go to landfills and simultaneously generate a usable energy source. The process typically involves controlled incineration of non-recyclable waste under specific conditions.

The waste material is first sorted to remove hazardous substances and recyclable components. The remaining waste, often shredded or processed into pellets, is then fed into a combustion chamber. High temperatures are maintained to ensure complete combustion, minimizing the release of harmful pollutants. The heat generated from this combustion is used to produce steam, which in turn drives turbines to generate electricity. Alternatively, the heat can be used directly for district heating systems.

The ash produced as a byproduct can sometimes be further processed for use in construction materials.
