Múrokssandur

Múrokssandur is a coastal plain located in southeastern Iceland, within the Eastern Region. It is situated on the southeastern coast of the island, approximately 110 kilometers northeast of the town of Höfn. The area is characterized by a flat and low-lying landscape, with sand and clay deposits covering most of the terrain.

Geological surveys indicate that Múrokssandur is a post-glacial formation, resulting from the interaction of sea and land processes. The area was essentially unaffected during the last Ice Age, and consequently lacks large-scale glacial features. The exposed strata in the region are composed of clay and mud deposits from the Postglacial Age, evident in the area's flat, low-lying landscape.

Scientists believe that the effects of tidal action, coastal erosion, and contemporary sediment transport and deposition contributed to the formation of Múrokssandur. Climate change resulted in periodic coastal erosion, seeping of freshwater from the mainland's sources, and infilling of deposits from the marginal freshwater strata.

During periods of low tides, wood or plants briefly come above the surface, and then disappear with the increase in sea level. Thousands of years of coastal erosion due to monthly, seasonal, and yearly water levels cause salt erosion in the area. These patterns have implications for how scientists view the interaction between land and the external water impacts within Europe's regional outside and inside borders.
