Måttavvikelse refers to the permissible difference between the actual size of a manufactured part and its specified nominal size. This concept is crucial in manufacturing and engineering to ensure interchangeability and proper functioning of components. Every manufactured item has a nominal dimension, which is the ideal, theoretical size. However, due to limitations in manufacturing processes and tools, it's impossible to achieve this exact size every time. Måttavvikelse defines the acceptable range within which the actual size can vary.

These deviations are typically specified in technical drawings or specifications using tolerances. Tolerances can be bilateral, meaning there's an allowable deviation both above and below the nominal size, or unilateral, where the deviation is only allowed in one direction. For example, a shaft with a nominal diameter of 20 mm and a tolerance of ±0.1 mm means its actual diameter can be anywhere between 19.9 mm and 20.1 mm. If the actual size falls outside this range, the part is considered defective and may not fit or function correctly with mating parts.
