Määrdeainetena refers to lubricants in Finnish. Lubricants are substances, solid or liquid, used to reduce friction between moving surfaces. The properties of a lubricant are crucial for its effectiveness. Viscosity, the resistance to flow, is a key factor, as it determines the lubricant's ability to maintain a film under varying temperatures and pressures. Lubricants can be broadly categorized into mineral oils, synthetic oils, and solid lubricants. Mineral oils, derived from petroleum, are the most common. Synthetic oils are engineered for specific demanding applications and offer superior performance. Solid lubricants, such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide, are used in environments where liquid lubricants might be impractical, like extreme temperatures or vacuum conditions.

The selection of a lubricant depends heavily on the specific application. Factors like the type of machinery, operating speeds, loads, and environmental conditions all play a role. Proper lubrication is essential for the longevity and efficient operation of countless mechanical systems, from automotive engines and industrial machinery to precision instruments.
