Mätstorheter

Mätstorheter are units of measurement used to quantify physical quantities. In Sweden they form part of the national metrology system, which conforms to the International System of Units (SI). The Swedish authority responsible for metrology is the Swedish National Metrology Institute, known as Svenska Metrologin. This institute ensures that measurements made in Sweden are traceable to SI standards, providing a common basis for science, industry and commerce.

Historically, Sweden used a variety of traditional units such as the "talet", "stöt" and "järn" for length, and the "pär" for weight. These units were replaced gradually during the 19th and 20th centuries when the metric system was introduced in 1876, first for legal metering and later fully for everyday use by 1908. The transition was aided by Swedish legislation that mandated the adoption of metric units for trade, taxation, and scientific research.

Today the most common mätstorheter include the meter (m) for length, kilogram (kg) for mass, second (s) for time, ampere (A) for electric current, kelvin (K) for temperature, mole (mol) for amount of substance, and candela (cd) for luminous intensity. Additional derived units such as newton, pascal, joule, watt, coulomb and hertz are regularly employed in engineering and physics contexts.

For public safety, legal metering of energy, fuel, and pharmaceuticals relies on precise calibration certificates issued by Svenska Metrologin. These certificates are traceable to foreign national reference laboratories through the European Union’s joint calibration program, ensuring international compatibility of Swedish measurements.
