Mäntäjärjestelmät, commonly known as piston systems, are fundamental mechanical assemblies used to convert reciprocating linear motion into rotational motion or vice versa. They are a cornerstone of many engines and hydraulic systems. The core components typically include a cylinder, a piston that moves within the cylinder, and a connecting rod that links the piston to a crankshaft or other rotating element.

In internal combustion engines, the controlled explosion of fuel within the cylinder pushes the piston downwards. This linear motion is transmitted via the connecting rod to the crankshaft, which rotates and powers the vehicle or machinery. The cycle involves intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes, all driven by the piston's movement.

In hydraulic systems, piston systems operate on a different principle. Here, hydraulic fluid is used to transmit force. A piston moving within a cylinder can be used to generate pressure (as in a hydraulic pump) or to exert force and motion (as in a hydraulic actuator or cylinder). The sealed nature of the piston within the cylinder allows for efficient pressure generation and transfer.
