Mzuzu

Mzuzu is a city in northern Malawi. It is the capital of the Northern Region and the administrative center of Mzimba District. The city lies in the northern highlands, near the Viphya Mountains, at an elevation of roughly 1,200 to 1,300 meters above sea level. This elevation gives Mzuzu a cooler climate compared with much of the country, with a marked wet season from November to April.

Mzuzu serves as a regional commercial hub, with markets, shops, and government offices that serve northern Malawi. The city is home to Mzuzu University, a public higher-education institution, and it hosts several secondary schools and health facilities. The surrounding district supports agriculture, including maize, coffee, and tea, and forestry contributes to the local economy through timber production from the Viphya Plantation.

Mzuzu is connected by the M1 road to other cities in Malawi and to neighboring regions, and it is served by Mzuzu Airport (IATA: MAZ), providing domestic air links. Public transport within the city includes minibuses, taxis, and buses.

Mzuzu has experienced growth since the late 20th century, reflecting its role as the northern region's administrative and economic center.
