Mytikas

Mytikas, Greek Μύτικας, is the highest peak of Mount Olympus in northern Greece and the country’s loftiest point, rising to about 2,917 meters above sea level. It lies within the Olympus massif, part of the Olympus National Park, and is approached from the foothills near Litochori and the Prionia roadhead.

The summit is a central objective for mountaineers and hikers who tackle the standard route from Prionia to Spilios Agapitos Refuge, then along the Skala saddle to the final ascent to the summit. The climb is a long, strenuous day that combines hiking with exposed scrambling in its upper sections. Although most climbers complete the ascent in summer, winter ascents are undertaken by experienced mountaineers with technical gear, as conditions can be severe and routes become icy and avalanche-prone.

Geographically, Mytikas sits in a rugged limestone massif characterized by alpine terrain, scree, and occasional snowfields. The area supports a high-macchia flora and a range of alpine fauna, with weather that can change rapidly, including strong winds and sudden rainfall. The peak and surrounding routes require good preparation, appropriate equipment, and respect for the protected status of the Olympus National Park, with guidelines designed to protect both visitors and natural resources.

Culturally, Mount Olympus has long been associated with Greek mythology as the mythical home of the gods, a context that adds historic and literary significance to the natural landmark of Mytikas. The summit remains a symbol of Greece’s mountainous landscape and outdoor heritage.
