Mykgjørere

The term "mykgjørere" is a Norwegian word that translates to "softeners" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of water treatment. Mykgjørere are devices designed to remove minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, from water. These minerals are responsible for what is commonly known as "hard water." Hard water can cause various issues, including limescale buildup in pipes and appliances, reduced efficiency of soap and detergents, and dry skin and hair.

Water softeners typically work through a process called ion exchange. Hard water flows through a tank containing resin beads that are coated with sodium ions. As the water passes over the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin and bind to it, while the sodium ions are released into the water. Over time, the resin beads become saturated with mineral ions and need to be regenerated. This regeneration process involves flushing the resin with a brine solution (saltwater), which displaces the mineral ions and recharges the beads with sodium ions. The displaced mineral ions are then flushed away.

Mykgjørere are a common household appliance in areas with naturally hard water. They can significantly improve the quality of water, leading to longer appliance lifespan and a more pleasant user experience. The salt used for regeneration is a key component in the operation of many mykgjørere.
