The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a self-report questionnaire designed to indicate different psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. Developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katharine Briggs during World War II, the MBTI is based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological types. The indicator identifies 16 distinct personality types, each represented by a four-letter code. These letters correspond to four dichotomies: extraversion (E) versus introversion (I), sensing (S) versus intuition (N), thinking (T) versus feeling (F), and judging (J) versus perceiving (P).

Individuals are assigned a type based on their responses, which is believed to reflect their natural inclinations and preferences. Judging types prefer structure and order, aiming for closure, while perceiving types are more flexible and spontaneous, preferring to keep their options open.

The MBTI is widely used in various contexts, including career counseling, team building, and personal development. It aims to provide insights into individual strengths, potential challenges, and communication styles. While popular, it's important to note that the MBTI is a descriptive tool and not a definitive measure of personality. Its validity and reliability have been subjects of ongoing debate within the psychological community.
