Myelinoituneista refers to the process of myelination, which is the formation of the myelin sheath around nerve fibers. Myelin is a fatty insulating layer that surrounds axons, which are the long projections of nerve cells. This sheath is produced by specialized glial cells: oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord).

The primary function of myelination is to increase the speed at which electrical impulses, or action potentials, travel along the axon. The myelin sheath is not continuous but is interrupted at regular intervals by gaps called nodes of Ranvier. This segmented insulation allows for a process called saltatory conduction, where the electrical signal "jumps" from one node to the next, dramatically speeding up transmission compared to unmyelinated axons.

Myelination is a critical developmental process that begins during fetal development and continues into early adulthood. It is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, enabling rapid communication between different parts of the brain and body. Disorders that affect myelination, such as multiple sclerosis, can lead to severe neurological impairments due to disrupted nerve signal transmission.
