Myelination is a biological process by which myelin, a fatty, insulating substance, is produced and wrapped around the axons of neurons, allowing for efficient transmission of electrical signals. This process is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Myelination is initiated by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Each oligodendrocyte or Schwann cell extends multiple arms to one axon, wrapping layers of myelin around it.

The myelin sheath forms a specialized membrane known as the "myelin sheath interphase," where proteins and lipids are embedded. Myelin plays a crucial role in speeding up electrical impulses, making it possible for neurons to transmit signals over long distances in a relatively short time.

Disruption of myelination can lead to various neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis (MS), where the immune system damages the myelin sheath, causing loss of myelin and electrical dysfunction. Other conditions like leukodystrophies affect myelin's production in the central nervous system.

In some research, regeneration of the myelin sheath has been suggested as a promising avenue to treat various neurodegenerative diseases. However, this remains a topic of ongoing investigation.
