Mydriatischen is a term used in ophthalmology to describe the condition of having dilated pupils. This dilation, medically known as mydriasis, can occur naturally or be induced. Natural mydriasis can be a physiological response to low light conditions, as the iris muscles relax to allow more light to enter the eye and improve vision in dim environments. It can also be a response to strong emotional states like fear or excitement, mediated by the sympathetic nervous system.

Pharmacological mydriasis is often intentionally induced by eye care professionals using mydriatic eye drops. These drops contain medications, such as tropicamide or phenylephrine, that paralyze the iris sphincter muscle or stimulate the iris dilator muscle, respectively. This dilation is crucial for comprehensive eye examinations, allowing doctors to get a clear view of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of the eye. Mydriasis can also be a side effect of certain medications, including some antidepressants, antihistamines, and anticholinergics. In rare cases, mydriasis can be a symptom of a neurological disorder or head injury. The effects of mydriatic drops typically wear off within a few hours, but can temporarily cause blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light.
