Muunnoshäviöt

Muunnoshäviöt refers to the energy losses that occur during the conversion of electrical energy from one form to another. This phenomenon is most commonly associated with transformers, which are used to step up or step down voltage. When electricity flows through the primary coil of a transformer, it induces a magnetic field. This field then induces a current in the secondary coil, but this process is not perfectly efficient.

There are several types of losses that contribute to muunnoshäviöt in transformers. Core losses, also known as iron losses, occur in the transformer's iron core. These are further divided into hysteresis losses, caused by the continuous magnetization and demagnetization of the core material, and eddy current losses, which are circulating currents induced within the core itself. Copper losses, or winding losses, occur in the copper windings of the transformer due to the electrical resistance of the wire. As current flows through the windings, heat is generated, representing lost energy. Stray losses are also a factor, arising from leakage flux and other imperfections in the magnetic circuit.

These losses result in a reduction of the total power transferred and an increase in the operating temperature of the transformer. Minimizing muunnoshäviöt is crucial for improving the efficiency of power transmission and distribution systems, as even small percentages of loss can translate to significant amounts of wasted energy over large scales. Transformer design, material selection, and operating conditions all play a role in their overall efficiency and the magnitude of these conversion losses.
