Muudetavaks

Muudetavaks is an Estonian grammatical form used to express the idea of becoming changeable or modifiable. It is the translative form of the participle muudetav, which means “capable of being changed.” In Estonian, the translative suffix -ks marks a state toward which something is changing or into which it is brought. The combination muudetav + ks yields muudetavaks, a form that can describe a process or requirement to become changeable.

Usage and function: Muudetavaks functions as an adjective-like or participial constituent that can modify nouns or serve in predicative constructions with the verb olema (to be) or other linking verbs. It is commonly used in technical, administrative, or normative texts to indicate that an object, system, document, or procedure should be, or is in the process of being, altered so that it gains modifiability. The related noun muudetavus means “modifiability.”

Morphology: Muudetavaks is formed from the verb muuda (to change) through the agentive/participial suffix for a form meaning “able to be changed,” combined with the translative suffix -ks to signal a state into which something is converted. This reflects Estonian grammar’s use of participial forms together with translative case to describe results of change.

Etymology: The root muudet- derives from muuta “to change,” with the participial suffix -dav/-atav producing muudetav, and the translative suffix -ks producing muudetavaks.
