Muttrah

Muttrah, also spelled Mutrah, is a historic district in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Located on the coast along the Gulf of Oman, Muttrah sits at the harbor’s edge and forms the traditional waterfront quarter of the city. The area is known for its older buildings, narrow lanes, and a mix of residential and commercial activity.

Historically, Muttrah has served as Muscat’s commercial gateway and fishing port. Its port and waterfront developed as sea trade expanded, contributing to the city’s prosperity. The district preserves a traditional urban fabric even as newer development reshapes parts of Muscat.

Prominent sites in Muttrah include Muttrah Fort, a historic fortress that overlooks the harbor; the Muttrah Souq, a lively market famed for spices, textiles, jewelry, and crafts; and the nearby Muttrah Fish Market along the Corniche, where daily auctions and seafood trades take place. The Muttrah Corniche, a waterfront promenade, offers views of the harbor and the city beyond.

Today Muttrah continues to function as a commercial and residential district within Muscat. It attracts visitors with its traditional markets, historic architecture, and harbor atmosphere, while remaining an active part of the city’s economy and daily life.
