Musikkrespons

Musikkrespons, literally “music response” in Norwegian, is a term used to describe the reactions elicited by music in listeners, performers, and participants. It encompasses emotional, cognitive, physiological, and social dimensions and is considered across educational, therapeutic, and research contexts.

It is studied in disciplines such as psychology of music, music education, and music therapy. The concept covers spontaneous affective reactions as well as deliberate evaluations of music, and it can occur during listening, performing, or creating music.

Dimensions include affective responses (pleasure, sadness, excitement), cognitive responses (attention, memory, expectation), physiological arousal (heart rate, skin conductance), motor responses (movement, tapping), and social responses (shared experience, communal engagement).

Methods to study musikkrespons range from qualitative approaches (interviews, observations, diary studies) to quantitative measures (surveys, Likert scales, standardized mood or engagement scales). Experimental work may manipulate musical features such as tempo, mode, timbre, or loudness to observe differential responses. In neuroscience, musikkrespons is linked to neural circuits involved in emotion, reward, and auditory processing.

Applications include informing music education by assessing student engagement and guiding instruction; guiding music therapy to evoke or regulate emotional and physiological states; and supporting research on how musical parameters influence listener experience.
