Muotoutumiskäyttäytyminen, often translated as imprinting, refers to a type of learning that occurs at a specific, critical period in an animal's life. During this sensitive phase, an young animal forms a strong, often irreversible, attachment to a particular object or individual. This attachment is typically to the first moving object it encounters, which in natural circumstances is usually its parent. Once this bond is established, the animal will follow and recognize this object as its caregiver.
