Munkafüggvény, often translated as "work function," is a fundamental concept in physics, particularly in solid-state physics and quantum mechanics. It represents the minimum thermodynamic work required to remove an electron from the surface of a solid to a point in the vacuum just outside the solid. This process implies that the electron is moved from the Fermi level, the highest occupied energy level at absolute zero temperature, to the vacuum level, the lowest energy level an electron can occupy outside the material.

The work function is a characteristic property of a material and is influenced by factors such as the material's composition, crystal structure, and surface conditions. Impurities or adsorbed molecules on the surface can significantly alter the work function. It is typically measured in electronvolts (eV).

Understanding the work function is crucial for various applications. For instance, it plays a vital role in thermionic emission, where heat causes electrons to be emitted from a surface. It is also essential in the operation of photoelectric devices, such as solar cells and photodetectors, where light energy is used to eject electrons.
