Munajohtimet

Munajohtimet, also known as fallopian tubes or oviducts, are a crucial part of the female reproductive system. These two slender tubes extend from the upper corners of the uterus towards the ovaries. Their primary function is to transport an egg from the ovary to the uterus. This transport is facilitated by a combination of muscular contractions of the tube walls and the sweeping motion of cilia, tiny hair-like structures lining the inner surface of the tubes.

Fertilization typically occurs within the fallopian tube. After ovulation, the egg is released from the ovary and enters the fimbriated end of the fallopian tube, a funnel-shaped structure that helps capture the egg. Sperm, having traveled from the vagina through the cervix and uterus, meet the egg in the tube. If fertilization takes place, the resulting zygote begins its journey towards the uterus, where it implants and develops.

The health of the fallopian tubes is vital for natural conception. Blockages or damage to the tubes, often caused by infections like pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis, can lead to infertility or ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually within the tube itself.
