Muistutus

Muistutus is a Finnish noun meaning a reminder or notice. In everyday language it refers to any prompt to act or remember something. In financial and administrative contexts, muistutus specifically denotes a formal notice sent when a payment is overdue. The common form is a reminder letter or a separate document called muistutuslasku, which states the amount due, the original due date, a new due date, and any reminder fee (muistutuskulu). It may also inform the debtor of possible consequences if the debt remains unpaid.

The issuance of reminders is governed by contractual terms and applicable laws related to debt collection and consumer protection. Charges for reminders and any late payment interest are typically disclosed in advance and must be in line with applicable regulations. The purpose of a muistutus is to prompt payment and inform the debtor of the next steps if the debt is not settled.

If the reminder is not paid, the creditor may proceed with debt collection (perintä), which can involve a collection agency or, in certain cases, a court process. Reminders are commonly used by banks, utilities, landlords, and other creditors to recover overdue payments and to encourage timely settlement.

Muistutus also has a broader meaning beyond finance: it can refer to any prompt to remember a deadline, appointment, or obligation, such as calendar reminders, work tasks, or personal commitments. The term is widely used in Finnish-speaking contexts and appears in both formal communications and everyday use.
