Muistisolu

Muistisolu is a Finnish term that translates to "memory cell" in English. It is a fundamental concept in immunology, referring to a type of lymphocyte that has been primed to recognize a specific antigen. These cells are generated after an initial exposure to an antigen, such as from a pathogen or a vaccine.

Upon subsequent encounters with the same antigen, memory cells mount a faster and stronger immune response compared to naive lymphocytes. This rapid activation is crucial for providing long-term immunity and protecting the body from reinfection. There are two main types of adaptive immune cells that can become memory cells: B lymphocytes (B cells) and T lymphocytes (T cells). B memory cells are responsible for producing antibodies, while T memory cells contribute to cell-mediated immunity.

The development and maintenance of memory cells are key principles underlying vaccination. Vaccines introduce antigens to the body in a safe form, stimulating the production of memory cells without causing disease. This ensures that if the individual is later exposed to the actual pathogen, their immune system can quickly eliminate it, preventing illness.
