Motorventilator

A motorventilator, also known as a mechanical ventilator, is a medical device used to assist or control a person's breathing. It is commonly employed in intensive care units and operating theaters to support patients with respiratory failure, injuries, or surgeries that impair breathing.

The motorventilator delivers air to the lungs through a tube inserted into the mouth or nose, or through a tracheostomy tube inserted directly into the windpipe. The device can be set to provide either spontaneous ventilation, where the patient initiates breaths and the ventilator supports them, or controlled ventilation, where the ventilator delivers breaths at a set rate and volume.

There are two main types of motorventilators: volume-controlled and pressure-controlled. Volume-controlled ventilators deliver a set volume of air with each breath, while pressure-controlled ventilators deliver air until a set pressure is reached.

Motorventilators can be adjusted to deliver different modes of ventilation, including assisted ventilation, where the patient initiates breaths and the ventilator supports them, and synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation, where the ventilator delivers breaths at regular intervals to prevent apnea.

The use of motorventilators is a critical component of intensive care and can significantly improve outcomes for patients with severe respiratory distress. However, their use also carries risks, including barotrauma, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and prolonged mechanical ventilation dependency. Therefore, their application must be carefully monitored and managed by healthcare professionals.
