Morphophonology is a subfield of linguistics that studies the interaction between morphology, the study of word structure, and phonology, the study of sound systems. It investigates how the meaningful units of language (morphemes) are represented phonologically and how sound changes interact with word formation. Essentially, it examines the relationship between the form of a word and its sound, particularly when morphemes are combined.

Key areas within morphophonology include allomorphy, where a single morpheme has different phonological realizations. For example, the English plural morpheme can be realized as /s/ (cats), /z/ (dogs), or /ɪz/ (churches), depending on the preceding sound. Another important concept is the phonological conditioning of morphological processes, where the choice of a particular morpheme or its form is determined by the phonological environment.

Morphophonological rules explain how sounds change at the boundaries between morphemes or within words during the process of word formation or inflection. These rules can involve assimilation, where a sound becomes more like a neighboring sound, or deletion, where a sound is dropped. Understanding morphophonology is crucial for explaining patterns in language that cannot be adequately described by either morphology or phonology in isolation. It helps linguists account for the systematic variations in the pronunciation of words that are related in meaning and structure.
