The cylinder block is the foundation of the engine, housing the cylinders where the combustion process occurs. The cylinder head sits atop the cylinder block and contains the intake and exhaust valves, as well as the spark plugs in gasoline engines. Pistons move up and down within the cylinders, compressing the air-fuel mixture and then expelling the exhaust gases. Connecting rods transfer the force from the pistons to the crankshaft, which converts the linear motion of the pistons into rotational motion.

The camshaft, driven by the crankshaft, controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves through the valve train components. These components include the camshaft gears, rocker arms, pushrods, and valve springs. The valve springs ensure that the valves remain closed when not in use, preventing exhaust gases from leaking back into the combustion chamber.

Other essential components include the fuel system, which delivers fuel to the engine, and the lubrication system, which keeps the engine running smoothly by reducing friction between moving parts. The cooling system, consisting of the radiator, water pump, and thermostat, helps maintain the engine's operating temperature.

Each of these components plays a crucial role in the overall performance and efficiency of the engine. Understanding the function and interaction of these components is essential for engine maintenance, repair, and optimization.
