Montaperti is a small Italian locality in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is historically significant primarily for being the site of the Battle of Montaperti, which took place on September 4, 1260. This battle was a pivotal event in the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines in medieval Italy. The Ghibelline forces, primarily from Siena and allied German mercenaries, achieved a decisive victory over the Florentine Guelphs.

The battle's outcome had a profound impact on the political landscape of Tuscany. The defeat severely weakened Florence and temporarily halted its expansionist ambitions. The victory for the Ghibellines, supported by the Holy Roman Empire, bolstered their influence in the region. The battle is famously immortalized in Dante Alighieri's epic poem, the Divine Comedy, specifically in the Inferno. Dante uses the battle to illustrate the consequences of factional strife and the divine judgment of those involved.
