Monmouth

Monmouth is a town in southeastern Wales and the county town of Monmouthshire. It lies on the River Monnow at its confluence with the River Wye, near the border with England. The Welsh name for the town is Trefynwy.

Its history includes Roman and medieval settlement. Notable landmarks include Monmouth Castle, in ruins, and the Monnow Bridge and Gate, a 14th-century fortified river crossing. The Shire Hall, dating to the 18th century, stands in the town centre. Monmouth is traditionally associated with the birthplace of King Henry V.

Today Monmouth functions as a market town and regional tourist centre for the Wye Valley and the Marches, with a High Street of shops, markets, and historic inns. The town serves as a hub for local commerce, culture, and access to surrounding countryside.

The name Monmouth is used in other places in the United States, including Monmouth, Illinois; Monmouth, Oregon; and the Monmouth University campus in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Monmouth County is a neighbouring New Jersey county.
