Mollisävelasteissa

Mollisävelasteissa refers to scales in music that are based on a minor interval. In Western music theory, the most common understanding of a minor scale is one that starts with a specific pattern of whole and half steps, creating a generally melancholic or somber sound. There are several types of minor scales, each with its own distinct intervallic structure.

The natural minor scale, also known as the Aeolian mode, consists of the intervals: whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole. This is often considered the purest form of the minor scale. The harmonic minor scale modifies the natural minor by raising the seventh degree by a half step. This creates a more dramatic or exotic sound and is frequently used in classical music. The melodic minor scale further modifies the harmonic minor by also raising the sixth degree by a half step when ascending. However, when descending, the melodic minor typically reverts to the natural minor scale. This alteration gives it a smoother sound in melodic lines.

Beyond these primary forms, other traditions and theoretical frameworks may use different constructions of minor scales. The concept of a "minor" sound is subjective and can be influenced by cultural context and musical style. Regardless of the specific construction, minor scales are a fundamental building block in Western music, providing a crucial contrast to major scales and contributing to the vast emotional palette of musical expression.
